AUBURN, Ind. -- With additional snow and single digit temperatures in the forecast the Auburn Water Department encourages all city residents to be mindful of protecting their water meter and supply piping from freezing during frigid temperatures.
The weekend weather forecast calls for snow on Friday and Saturday with temperatures dropping into the single digits and below zero into next week.
Protecting supply piping and water meters is as simple as insulating hose faucets to keep cold air away. Faucet covers can be used or you can place an insulated glove or towel over outside faucets then cover them with a plastic bag and tape.
Other ways to protect your home:
- Unhook all garden hoses.
- Repair broken windows and keep garage doors closed.
- Install insulating products (pipe insulation and heat tape) in unheated areas.
- Run a trickle of water at a faucet to prevent freeze-ups.
The Auburn Water Department is not responsible for damage to the water meter or supply piping due to freeze-up. Frozen meter charges (starting at $302) are applied to the customer's account.
