AUBURN, Ind. – Officers with the Auburn Police Department took time out of their busy schedules to give back to the community and brighten the holiday season for a group of local children Thursday night.

This year’s Shop with a Cop event at the Auburn Walmart assisted 12 children from 9 families.

During the event each officer was paired with a child, giving them the opportunity to do a little Christmas shopping for members of their family. Each child was also given the opportunity to pick out a few gifts for themselves. Each year the children are encouraged to pick out a piece of clothing to keep them warm during the winter months.

Auburn Police Chief Cory Heffelfinger said the event is one of his favorite parts of the job.

“The event is a great chance for children to meet and hang out with officers, while at the same time we are
helping those that truly neeIMG_0664d it,” he said. “The event allows us to interact with children and families in a way we normally do not get to.”

The event is made possible thanks to the generosity of local individuals who donate to the cause each year.

Heffelfinger said his department would like to thank all the donors who continue to support the program,
which began in the mid-1990s.

Along with the shopping experience families also received gift certificates for a pizza dinner from a local restaurant.
